1943
Leo Kanner publishes first paper identifying autism in children;
he is the first to use the word autism in its modern sense when
he introduces the label early infantile autism.
1944
Hans Asperger describes an autism disorder in children that is
later known as Asperger’s Syndrome.
1965
The Autism Society of
America is founded.
1970s
Evidence of a genetic
role is debated.
1990s
More research is done
and shows a possible genetic link to autism.
1995
Since 1977 the number
of students enrolled in federal programs for children with
disabilities increases by 47%.
2001
The Lower Delaware
Autism Foundation is incorporated in the state of Delaware.
2005
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 in 166 children are affected by autism.

Autism Foundation opens the doors to its first office in Lewes,
